Lightlark,by Alex Aster

Book Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Lightlark was a pretty interesting book overall. I liked how each of the six rulers had their own unique personality, and I especially enjoyed how they were all competing against each other during each challenge.

The World of Lightlark

Lightlark felt magical, and it was easy to imagine the world while reading. One of the things I found really interesting was that each kingdom had its own unique power, which made every kingdom feel different from the next.

I also liked the idea that every kingdom had a curse holding it back. Each kingdom had its own power, but it also had something working against it. I thought that was a really clever and interesting part of the world-building.

The Centennial & Challenges

I absolutely loved the Centennial and the rules surrounding it. I thought the whole idea was so clever, and I really enjoyed watching the six rulers compete during each challenge.

I enjoyed trying to figure out what was happening throughout the story. There were so many things to question and figure out, which kept me interested even when the pacing slowed down.

The Characters

I think Isla is a good main character because she is not only brave but also very clever. I enjoyed following her throughout the story and seeing how she handled everything happening around her.

Besides Isla, my favorite ruler was the Moonling ruler. She seemed so mysterious and elegant, which immediately made her stand out to me. I was constantly suspicious of Grim, the Nightshade ruler, because I felt like he was hiding something. That made me pay more attention to his character and wonder what he was really planning.

However, I found the Skyling ruler confusing. I couldn’t quite figure out what he was trying to achieve, what kind of person he was, or even what his personality really was. Another problem i had with Lightlark was that though the book has some good aspects the book should have been a little deeper and i don’t think the worldbuiding was that strong and i wasn’t able to gain a full understanding

The Pacing

The biggest problem I had with Lightlark was the pacing. I felt like the book was a little too long and that some parts were way too stretched out.

The beginning was good, but the middle became a little boring for me. Then, all of a sudden, the ending became extremely fast-paced, and everything started happening at once. I think the story would have been better for me if the pacing had been more consistent throughout the book.

The Writing

I enjoyed Alex Aster’s writing style, and the book was easy to read. I could follow the story without struggling with the writing.

⭐ Final Rating

Overall, I would give Lightlark 3 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐

Despite the slow pacing, I still think it was a good book and is worth reading. I loved the different kingdoms and their powers, the curses, the Centennial, and the competition between the rulers.

I would recommend Lightlark to someone who enjoys fantasy, magical worlds, competitions, mysteries, and characters with unique abilities and doesn’t min the pacing being slow.

Maybe in the future I’ll read Nightbane, the second book in the Lightlark saga to see if it is better than the first.
