Powerless — Book Review

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Powerless is a good book, and when I think about it, I immediately picture a girl without powers living in a world where everyone else has them—and somehow becoming powerful in her own way.

The Trials

My favorite part of the book was the trials. I liked how every trial was completely different from the one before it, so they never felt the same.

I also enjoyed watching the characters form alliances and figuring out who they could actually trust. My favorite was the third trial because it had the highest stakes and was the most action-packed. The twists also really surprised me, and there were definitely moments when I was completely taken aback by what happened.

The World

I liked the world of Powerless overall, but what I found most interesting was the idea of Elites and Ordinaries.

The Elites have powers gifted to them by the Plague, while the Ordinaries have none. Because the Elites believe Ordinaries weaken their abilities, an order is made to kill every last Ordinary in Ilya. I thought this was a really interesting and unique idea.

The Characters

I liked Paedyn as the main character. She definitely knows how to make a fool out of people, and I thought she was clever, a little sarcastic, and very very stubborn. When I first heard her name, though, I honestly thought she was a boy!

There were times when I agreed with Paedyn’s decisions, but there were also moments when I was just thinking, why? Just why?

I also really liked Kai. I thought he was a great MMC because he was brave and had been through a lot at such a young age. I also really enjoyed his dynamic with Paedyn.

Kitt, on the other hand, wasn’t really my favorite. I found him a little boring, and I thought he was too kind and not very fun.

The Pacing

The biggest problem I had with Powerless was the pacing. I thought it was slow and way too long.

Usually, I can finish a book within about two weeks, but Powerless took me three months just to read the first 400 pages. Then somehow, I read the final 100 pages in only three days.

Another thing that bothered me was that after reading Powerless, I read The Hunger Games and Red Queen, and I noticed quite a few similarities between some of the events. It made some parts feel less original to me.

The Ending

I thought the ending was pretty good and definitely made me curious about what would happen next. I might read Reckless later because I’m curious to see if the second book is better than the first.

Final Rating

Overall, I give Powerless 3 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐

It had exciting trials, interesting characters, and a unique world, but the slow pacing, length and the similarities to some of my other favorite books made it difficult for me to get through and less enjoyable.

It was a good book, but definitely not one of my favorites.
