Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed reading The Selection. It’s a super fun book, and it’s light and easy to read. If you just finished a book with a lot of plot twists and intense moments, The Selection is a great book to take a break with.
The Selection
My favorite thing about the book was definitely the Selection itself. I really liked the idea of 35 girls going to the palace to compete for the chance to marry the prince and have their lives completely changed. It was so fun to read about.
I especially liked seeing how differently all the girls reacted to the competition. Some became jealous when another girl did better than them, some became overconfident, and others were so nervous that they actually fainted. I also really enjoyed the eliminations. Every time someone was sent home, it raised the tension between the girls and made the competition even more interesting.
I especially enjoyed the surprises and drama. The drama is definitely one of the things that makes The Selection such a fun book to read.
The Kingdom & Society
Overall, I really liked the kingdom and its society, but I found the caste system really unfair. Your caste determines the kind of job you’re expected to have. For example, as a Five, you might have to be a painter or learn to play an instrument whether you like it or not.
I also found the royal life really interesting. I liked seeing that just because Maxon lives in a fancy palace with fancy clothes, fancy food, and a fancy life, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t have problems. He can still feel stuck and stressed, and sometimes his problems can even be bigger than those of people living in the lower castes.
The Characters
I liked America Singer, although sometimes I felt like when she got angry, she would make the wrong decision or do the wrong thing.
I like Maxon alot. He’s a great prince and has a really good personality. I enjoyed getting to know him throughout the story and seeing that there’s more to his life than what people might assume from the outside.
Honestly, I hate Aspen. He is probably my least favorite character. I found him really annoying, especially because he seems to think that just because America had certain opinions about Maxon before the Selection, she must still feel exactly the same way now that she’s actually gotten to know him. I don’t agree with the way he thinks about her feelings.
One thing I found kind of weird was the main character’s name. America Singer is such an unusual name, especially for the main character, and it took me a little while to get used to it.
The Writing & Pacing
I really enjoyed Kiera Cass’s writing style. It’s fun, entertaining, and easy to read, which made the book really enjoyable.
The pacing was also just right. Nothing felt like it was dragging on for too long, and the story kept moving at a pace that worked really well for me.
⭐ Final Rating
Overall, I give The Selection 4 out of 5 stars. ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
It’s a really fun, entertaining, and easy read, with plenty of drama, surprises, competition, and interesting characters. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you want something lighter to read after finishing a more intense book.
I will be continuing the series, and I can’t wait to see what happens next.
